PRP for the Face and Neck

Prof. Dr. Orhan Görgülü3 minute read

PRP stands for platelet rich plasma. The patient’s own blood is prepared and injected into the damaged tissue of the face, to rejuvenate the skin. The method is used on other parts of the body as well, and it increases the production of collagen in the face.

Because PRP carries a very low risk of infection and of allergy, many patients choose it.

How it is prepared

A small amount of blood is taken from the patient. The plasma is separated from it by a special process and injected back into the body.

The plasma that results is very rich in cells called platelets. The main task of platelets in the body is to clot the blood. Through the growth factors they carry, they also play a leading part in wound healing.

What it is used for

  • Improving wrinkles, restoring elasticity and brightness, and slowing the ageing of the skin
  • Lightening or removing pigmentation, alongside other treatments for it
  • Speeding up the rebuilding of the skin, alongside treatments such as laser and peels
  • Treating acne scars and other scars and burn marks, alongside other methods
  • Wounds and cracks that are slow to heal, and skin whose quality has been damaged
  • Hair loss, alone or to strengthen the effect of other treatments

It is used on every area that needs the skin renewed: the face, the neck, the décolletage, the backs of the hands, the inner legs, the arms and the scalp. Good results are also obtained for dark circles under the eyes and for pigmentation.

The procedure

A local anaesthetic cream is applied to the area. Once it has worked, the area is cleaned with an antiseptic solution. The mixture, prepared for what the skin needs, is then injected into the skin with very fine needles.

The material injected comes from the patient’s own blood, so there are no side effects. You return to daily life straight after the procedure.

How many sessions

The recommendation is 4 to 5 sessions at the start, usually one every 14 days. The number of sessions and the interval change with the state of the skin, the age of the patient and the aim of the treatment.

After 4 to 6 sessions on average, one application every 6 to 12 months keeps the result. The skin looks healthily bright straight after the procedure, and the effect becomes more lasting as the number of sessions rises.

After PRP

  • Do not wash the treated area in the first 24 hours.
  • Do no sport in the first 24 hours.
  • Do not take very hot baths, and stay out of the steam room, the sauna and the solarium. Keep away from heat, so that the effect lasts longer.
  • Stop smoking and drinking, or cut them down as far as possible.
  • Do not go into direct sunlight.
  • Apply ice after the procedure. It reduces redness and bruising.
  • Drink plenty of water.
