Lip filler is the injection of a dermal filler into the lip and around it, to shape the lip or to give it volume.
The filler used is hyaluronic acid, which is known for adding volume to the skin. It repairs the tissue and keeps the skin smooth.
The types
Lip fillers divide into temporary and permanent.
In permanent lip filler, silicone is used. In temporary lip filler, different materials can be used, and the one chosen most is hyaluronic acid.
The types also carry different names, according to the shape the lip is to be given. One example is the Aphrodite lip, named after the goddess of beauty. It describes full, attractive lips. In this treatment the features and the structure of the person’s face are taken into account first, so that the lips sit well on the face and match it.
Planning for the individual
Most patients today want to look beautiful, and they want the beauty to be taken for natural.
Everyone’s lip structure, social situation, way of wearing make-up, relationship between the nose and the lip, expectations and chin shape differ. For that reason the plan should be made for the individual, and the filler should suit the structure of that person’s face.
For defining the lip lines and the border, the most suitable fillers are of medium thickness with some elasticity. The lip then keeps working normally and the result stays natural. Women over 40 usually prefer this kind. The aim there is mostly to restore the lip rather than to make it fuller.
How much is used
Between 0.5 and 2 ml is usually used. The amount needed changes with the length and the thinness of the lip, and with whether both lips are treated.
If two syringes are needed, it is better and more controlled to do it in two sessions, a week apart.
How long it lasts
How long filler stays in the body depends on the brand, on how thick the filler is, and on how fast your body breaks it down.
Some filler remains after each treatment, so the effect lasts longer over time. Treatment usually has to be repeated every 8 to 12 months.
Permanent fillers have largely been abandoned today.
